Two $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Connor Kelly and Molly Weir

Our first recipient is Connor Kelly

Connor is ranked #5 in his class with a 4.2 GPA.  He will major in Electrical Engineering at Ohio State University.   Connor has participated in Robotics Club and Project Lead the Way as a Student Ambassador (Engineering).  He played soccer for four years (Team Captain) and varsity bowling for one year.  He has volunteered with the Fairview Park Recreation Center as an Assistant Basketball coach (2016-2019), Puritas Baseball League, as Assistant Baseball coach (2015-2018) and Youth Soccer Counselor (2015-2018). Even with his busy schedule, Connor did find time to work at Coatings Research Group as a lab assistant from 2017 to present and also Puritas Baseball as a concessions assistant since 2015.  He has been on the principals list all four years holding a 4.0 GPA or higher during those years.  He was also awarded varsity letters each year, two all-conference awards and scholar athletic in both soccer and bowling.   The biggest adversity he has had to deal with is with his health and a severe indent in his chest.  This caused breathing problems that he had to deal with playing sports.  He was still able to continue his sports but needed to be mindful of his limits.  His proudest moment was during his junior year when he passed and got college credit for four AP classes that he took.  He looks forward to working in the field of engineering.

Our second recipient is Molly Weir

Molly is ranked #36 in her class with a 4.3 GPA.   She will major in Journalism at Ohio State University where she was also accepted into the Scripts School of Journalism.  Molly participated in Scarlet Singers (2016-2019), National Honors Society (2017-2019), Yearbook Member (2016-2019) and Mosaic Club (2017-2019).  She played Soccer (Captain, two years) (2015-2019), Track and Field (2016-2019) and Varsity Bowling (2018-2019).  She volunteered as a church server (2012-2015), youth soccer camp (2015-2019) and Deck the Halls (2017-2018).  Even with her busy schedule she found time to work at East Coast Custard (2017-2018), Kohl’s (2018-2019) and was a swim instructor at Goldfish Swim School (March 2019 to present).   Various honors Molly has received during high school are Scholar Athlete for soccer and bowling, Principal’s List, Honor Roll, 1st Team All PAC for varsity soccer for 3 years, Greater Cleveland 2nd Team for varsity soccer for two years, Greater Cleveland Honorable Mention for soccer for one year, MVP for soccer and Academic Athletic for soccer, track and field and bowling.  The biggest obstacle she has had to overcome was tearing her MCL twice.  After her surgery recovery it allowed her to still play high school soccer but after the second tear, no college soccer was in her future.  She worked through her rehab and therapy assuring that she would complete her senior year strong.  She aspires to be a journalist, hoping that her work allows the reader to escape from their own life and enjoy the characters and story.

This year’s recipient is Liam Howatt – $500 scholarship

Liam is ranked #56 in his class with a 3.3 GPA.  He will major in Business at Otterbein University.  During Liam’s high school career he played football all four years (Captain), wrestled his freshman and senior year and was on the track and field team for three years.  Football was a huge part of his life starting to play tackle football in fifth grade.  At that time he did not realize how this sport would change his life and mold him into the person he became.  He volunteered helping family and friends with yard work all four years of high school.  He also worked as a head lifeguard from 2017 to present.  He was the Mark Tulios Warrior Award winner in the 2018-2019 school year in the sport of wrestling.   Liam will continue playing football in college and will go into the field of business.
