In 1986, the Fairview Park Education Foundation established their first scholarship.  Since then we have been awarding scholarships to outstanding Fairview High School seniors.   This year, the Foundation proudly awards the following 21 scholarships totaling $24,600:

Fairview Park Education Foundation’s 2020 Scholarships:

Dr. John Babel Memorial Scholarship – Established in 2016 in honor of the 3rd Superintendent of the school system.  Dr. Babel was born in upstate New York, and upon his high school graduation was intent on staying on the farm.  His father encouraged him to continue his schooling, finally pursuing a teaching certificate and later a master’s degree.  He was first in his family to attain a college degree and continued on to complete his PhD from The Ohio State University.  He taught at Cleveland State University for 25 years and was a member of the Rotarian Club for over 35 years.  Dr. Babel’s life was changed by those in education, and he believed in the value of lifelong learning. 

The $1,000.00 scholarship is being awarded to a senior who will pursue a career in education. 

This year’s recipient is Maxwell Meany

Max has a 3.4 GPA and is ranked 70th in his graduating class. He plans to study Integrated Mathematics Education at Bowling Green State University. During his time at FHS, Max was involved in Marching Band, where he served as section leader and band manager. He was also a member of the Soccer and Basketball teams. Max excelled in soccer helping lead his team to the OHSAA Regional Semi-Finals in 2019, in addition to being named First Team All Great Lakes Conference, First Team Greater Cleveland and he participated in the Greater Cleveland All Star Game. He notes compassion and a willingness to learn from mistakes as his greatest strengths. These qualities as well as his experience working and volunteering with kids will serve him well as a future teacher and soccer coach. Max hopes to positively influence the lives of kids by being a role model in the classroom and on the soccer field. 

Frank W. Barr Memorial Scholarship—was established in 1990 in honor of the 2nd Superintendent of the school system who served from 1964 to 1979.  Dr. Barr was a member of many professional educational organizations as well as a member of many community groups. 

The $500.00 scholarship is being awarded to a senior who will pursue a humanities and/or liberal arts major at a college of university. 

This year’s recipient is Kylie Cianciolo

Kylie is ranked 13th in her class and earned a GPA of 4.15. She has completed 15 CCP courses through Cuyahoga Community College where she is currently pursuing an Associate of Arts and an Associate of Science. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Tri-C. Upon completion of her Associates Degrees, she will continue her studies in the fields of Journalism and Philosophy. Kylie is most proud of being named the 2020 Westshore Campus Student of the Year at Cuyahoga Community College as well as earning the honor of Distinguished Leader in the Tri-C Student Leadership Certificate Program. Kylie’s high school activities include Key Club, Mosaic Club and In Club. Her professional goal is to work as a journalist and her personal goal is to have a wider outreach in her community, volunteering and helping others. 

Mary Lou Chalfant Memorial Social Studies Scholarship — Mary Lou was a social studies teacher at Fairview High School for many years.  She retired from the Fairview Park Schools and after her retirement established this scholarship.

The $500 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding social studies student who will be pursuing a career in Social Sciences or Social Studies Education. 

This year’s recipient is Paola Espinoza

Paola is graduating 6th in her class with a GPA of 4.3. She will study Political Science/Pre-Law with the intention of attending law school, eventually entering politics and perhaps becoming President of the United States. While in high school she participated in Yearbook Committee, Student Council, First Ring Student Leadership Academy, Stagecrafters, and Because I Said I Would. She was also a 4 year member of the Tennis team and served in the roll of Class President. She was honored as an Athletic Scholar, AP Scholar and was an AP Capstone Award winner. Paola’s proudest moment was being selected by Principal Vicha to represent the school community on Channel 3 news, speaking about the modified graduation plans adopted by Fairview Park City Schools, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Bruce Linden Cherkala Memorial Scholarship—was created in 1991 by the Cherkala family as a memory to their son, Bruce, who graduated from Fairview High School in 1968.  While at FHS, Bruce was an honor student, letterman in football and tennis.  Bruce went on to graduate from Denison University and then Case Western Reserve School of Medicine with a M.D. degree.  Bruce passed away suddenly in 1982. 

This $500.00 scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who will pursue science or mathematics at a college or university.

This year’s recipient is Mikayla Wiemels

Mikayla is graduating 4th in her class with a GPA of 4.39. She has chosen to attend Cleveland State University to pursue a degree in Health Science (Pre-Occupational Therapy) because of CSU’s outstanding Occupational Therapy program and because she loves the CLE! Mikayla was busy with a multitude of activities at FHS including, Marching Band, Stagecrafters, National Honor Society, Key Club, and International Thespian Society. She earned the AP Seminar and Research Certificate, AP Scholar Award and was nominated to the Homecoming Court. Recovering from mono her sophomore year was one of her greatest adversities, unfortunately causing her to miss out on activities she loved. However, this disappointment led to her devotion of time with Youth Challenge as a volunteer. This experience allowed Mikayla to discover her passion for working with children with disabilities. She was honored by the Board of Education and Mayor of Fairview Park as well as Youth Challenge, for having dedicated over 100 hours to the organization, positively impacting the lives of many children and their families. Mikayla’s long term goal is to obtain a Doctorate degree in Occupational Therapy and research new ways to make regular life more adaptable for those with physical and mental limitations. 

Laura Dean Scholarship Memorial Scholarship—established in March 2001 through a bequest of funding from the estate of a former Fairview Park teacher and former Fairview High School principal, Laura Dean.  Ms. Dean’s teaching and administrative career in the Fairview Park City Schools began in 1929 and lasted for 45 years.  Her first assignment was teaching mathematics to elementary students and later serving as the second principal of Fairview High School.  It was at her request that the scholarship awards be given to young women pursuing careers in mathematics or in the field of applied mathematics. 

Two $1,000.00 scholarships are awarded each year to deserving graduating female seniors. 

This year’s recipients are Lindsey Hill and Lauren Malloy

Lindsey holds a 4.2 GPA and is graduating 12th in her class. She will pursue her Doctor of Pharmacy at Ohio Northern University. At FHS, Lindsey was a member of the Academic Team and the National Technical Honor Society. She also played volleyball for 2 years, softball for 4 years and basketball for 4 years. She was chosen by her teammates to serve as captain of the basketball team for her junior and senior seasons. Although sidelined by an injury her senior basketball season, she remained committed to the team, redefined the role of captain, and led through her positive energy and peer encouragement. Lindsey was honored as an All-County Academic Athlete and All-Conference Athlete. She hopes to utilize her Pharmacy credentials to work in the hospital setting, collaborating with other medical professionals to provide outstanding medical care for patients. 

Lauren is graduating 6th in her class with a GPA of 4.3. While at FHS, she took multiple AP and CCP courses, earning her an AP Scholar Award. Lauren has committed to the University of Cincinnati where she will study Architecture. Lauren has seized nearly every opportunity to be involved and make the most of her high school experience. She was a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, Student News/Broadcast Club, Show Choir, Key Club, In Club, and Yearbook. She has demonstrated leadership as Vice-President of the Executive Board, Co-President of National Honor Society and anchor of the Student News. In addition, she excelled athletically, earning 8 Varsity letters as a Warrior (Track 4, Cross Country 1, Basketball 2, Soccer 1). As an environmental activist, Lauren will utilize her degree to work for an architecture or urban engineering firm focused on conscious environmental planning. She hopes to positively influence the environmental status of communities, making safe, healthy places for families to grow. 

Shirley Docherty Memorial Scholarship – was established in 2013 by her children Denise Devine and David in memory of their mother Shirley Docherty.  Shirley was a homemaker most of her life but after she graduated high school, she drew maps for the War Department.  After the war, she was employed for NACA, (now known as NASA) were she worked as a graphic artist in the Aircraft Engine Research Lab. 

The $500 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding art student pursuing a degree in Art/Graphic Arts at a college or university.

This year’s recipient is Savannah Zupan

Savannah is ranked 8th in her class and carries a GPA of 4.2. She is an exceptionally talented artist who will further develop her craft at the Columbus College of Art and Design, majoring in Fine Arts and minoring in Psychology. During high school, Savannah took a multitude of AP and CCP courses and she graduated as an AP Scholar. Savannah was heavily involved at FHS as a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, Thespian Society/Stagecrafters, Academic Team, and Swim Team. She volunteered at the Elyria Friendship APL as well as with Youth Challenge. Savannah was selected by the administration of FPCS to speak at the Community Strategic Planning meetings regarding school improvements and she also created a video that was utilized for community outreach. During the Summer of 2019, through an internship with Artworks Inspired Learning Center, she created a public mural located in the Glenville Arts Campus, near the VA Hospital in Cleveland. Savannah’s long term professional goals include earning a Master’s Degree in Counseling and eventually a PhD in Counseling/Art Therapy. Utilizing her credentials, she hopes “to be an art therapist for LGBT centers, rape crisis centers, immigrants, refugees, veterans and anyone who needs to be accepted and understood.”

Fairview Park Education Foundation Scholarship This $1,000.00 scholarship is to be awarded for overall academic/community and school achievement.

This year’s recipient is Abigail Dalton

Abigail graduates 18th in her class with a GPA of 4.0. She will be a third generation Buckeye this fall, attending The Ohio State University to pursue a degree in Health Information Technology. Abigail is a member of National Honor Society, Key Club and Student Council. She was also a multi-sport athlete, competing in Swimming, Volleyball, Softball, and Cross Country as well as participating in Synchronettes. She is active in her church as a member of Youth of St. Angela’s and she worked during high school. Abigail was nominated by the staff of FHS to serve on the Homecoming Court her junior and senior years and also was recognized as an AP Scholar and a 4 year Academic Athlete. She aspires to work for a corporation where she is able to combine marketing, business and healthcare to help people make more informed decisions about their health.

Richard Stuewe Fairview Park Education Foundation Memorial Scholarshipestablished in 2019, named in memory of Richard Stuewe.  He was a graduate of Fairview High School, teacher, counselor, coach in the Fairview Park City Schools and an honored member of the Fairview Park Education Foundation and many other organizations in Fairview Park.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student with overall academic/community and school achievement.

This year’s recipient is Matthew Kaufmann

Matt graduates with a 3.1 GPA and is ranked 92nd in the class. He will pursue a degree in Early Childhood Education at Notre Dame College where he will also compete as a collegiate wrestler. Matt is a gifted athlete who excelled at FHS as a member of the Warrior Football and Wrestling teams. As a wrestler, he was MVP, First Team All-Conference, Team Captain and an OHSAA State Qualifier for 3 years. Matt captained the football team his senior year and was named First Team All-Conference and Team MVP. He has demonstrated an outstanding work ethic during high school, balancing academics, athletics, volunteering, and work. As a future educator, Matt hopes to “mold my students’ lives,” as a teacher and “help kids get better and achieve their dreams,” as a wrestling coach. 

Maxine Field Memorial Scholarshipestablished in 2016 by the Field children in memory of their mother Maxine A. Field (nee Waack).  Maxine was a proud resident of Fairview Park.  She graduated from Fairview High School in 1948 where she was head majorette for the marching band.  Also, in 1948 she represented Fairview Park and the state of Ohio as Miss Ohio in the Miss America pageant.  In 1966 Maxine again represented Fairview Park and Ohio as Mrs. Ohio in the Mrs. America pageant.  Maxine was a model and fashion coordinator for many local stores and malls.  She also enjoyed singing, dancing and the theater where she acted in many local little theater productions and musicals. 

The $1,000 scholarship is to be awarded to a deserving graduating senior who will be pursuing a career in either the fashion industry or music (especially theater, singing and/or dancing)

This year’s recipient is JoHanna Arnold

JoHanna is ranked 16th in her class and graduates with a GPA of 4.0. She will attend Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory to study Music Performance. JoHanna’s love of music led to her involvement in Chamber Orchestra, String Orchestra and Jazz Band at FHS. In addition, she was a member of National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society and Theatre & Thespian Society. JoHanna’s exceptional talent allowed her to take part in Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, Cleveland Women’s Orchestra, Baldwin-Wallace Orchestras Concertino and Philharmonic, Lorain County Community College Civic Orchestra, OMEA Northwest Regional Orchestra, and All-State Orchestra. During her junior year, as a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, she had the good fortune of performing at the Saint Florian Cathedral in Austria and traveling throughout Europe. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that impacted her life in many ways. JoHanna’s ultimate goal is to be a member of the Cleveland Orchestra and to serve as a positive influence for other classical musicians of color.

Dorothy Graab Memorial Scholarship — was established in 2013 by children Donald and Janet Graab Miller in memory of their mother Dorothy Graab. After graduation, she went to Northwestern University where she majored in chemistry.  Dorothy continued to study piano until graduation in 1948. In 1948 she joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), a forerunner of NASA, as a chemist at the Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.  
Dorothy was an active volunteer in civic and community groups. She served as PTA president multiple times and was an elected School Board Member, ultimately serving as president of the Fairview Park School Board.  A lifelong lover of music, Dorothy was an accomplished piano player who took great pleasure and pride over the years in supporting the Cleveland Orchestra.

The $750 scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who is active in one or more music programs but is not necessarily pursuing that at a college or university.

This year’s recipient is Samuel Large

Samuel graduates 44th in his class with a GPA of 3.6. He intends to major in Environmental and Conservation Biology with a concentration in Environmental Policy and Management. While at FHS, Samuel was involved in many clubs and activities, especially music. Such activities include National Thespian Society, National Honor Society, Robotics Club, Jazz Band, Pep Band, Pit Orchestra, Solo & Ensemble Band, Marching Band, and Swim/Dive Team. Samuel also dedicated numerous hours to Venturing Crew and Boy Scouts. He is a founding member of Venturing Crew (Crew 440) and currently serves as President. In addition, he has held various leadership positions within his Boy Scouts troop, including webmaster, scribe, patrol leader, and outdoor ethics guide. After 7 years of dedication to scouting, and the completion of his 90-hour service project, Samuel earned the highest distinction possible, Eagle Scout. His long-term professional goal is to work within the state or county department of environmental conservation or natural resources where he can positively influence environmental policy and management. 

Judson Graab Memorial Scholarship — was established in 2013 by children Donald and Janet Graab Miller in memory of their father Judson Graab.  He attended Ohio Wesleyan University where he majored in chemistry.  Judson’s time at Ohio Wesleyan was interrupted by his service in the US Army during World War II. Upon graduation in 1948 he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), a forerunner of NASA, as a chemist at the Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.  Judson remained at NASA for his entire career, serving as the longtime head of the analytical chemistry department and he retired in 1978. 
Judson was also part of the team of parents who created the Fairview Park Band Boosters and establishing the annual Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast. Upon his retirement, Judson worked with the Fairview High School auto shop as a volunteer. His continued support was acknowledged by the Fairview Park Education Association with their Friend of Education award in 1992. 

The $750 scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who will pursue a degree in the sciences, preferably chemistry at a college or university.

This year’s recipient is Eric Hartman

Eric is graduating 42nd in his class with a GPA of 3.5. He will be attending the University of Akron to study Aerospace Systems Engineering. At FHS, Eric participated in First Ring Student Leadership Academy, Because I Said I Would, Swim Team, Jazz Band, and Marching Band. He served as President of the Band his senior year and was also a captain for the Swim Team. Away from school, Eric dedicated his time to Boy Scouts, Razor Sharks and his part-time job. Some of his proudest moments in high school occurred on Friday nights, during the halftime band performances. He was proud of the shows that his leadership helped create, and appreciative of the hard work of his fellow members. Following the completion of his engineering degree, Eric aspires to work for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Fred J. & Betty J. Helwig Memorial Scholarship—a scholarship was given in the names of their parents’ honor by the Helwig children.  The scholarship was created in 1999 and funded each year by the Helwig children.  The scholarships are awarded to hard-working students who demonstrate initiative, self-motivation and a desire to achieve following life changing obstacles they are presented with.  In addition to the scholarship award, the scholarship recipient’s names will be added to a permanent plaque that hangs in the Fairview High School halls to commemorate this award.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded and are renewable for up to a maximum of four years of college. 

This year’s recipients are Luke Chambers and Sophia Malloy

Luke earned a 3.5 GPA and will graduate 59th in his class. He will pursue a degree in Construction Management at Bowling Green State University. Luke served in the role of Class Vice-President his junior and senior years and was also a member of Show Choir. He is a multiple sport athlete, competing in Cross Country, Football, Basketball, and Track. He was honored with the Heart Award and Sportsmanship Award for Cross Country, Most Improved Award twice for Basketball and earned the Academic Athlete Award throughout high school in all sports. One of Luke’s greatest traits is his amazing work ethic as demonstrated in his desire to hold a part-time job since 8th grade. As a young child, Luke was diagnosed with dyslexia, eventually causing him to struggle, especially in middle school. Luke did not allow this to define him, but rather utilized the help that he was given and proved that with hard work, you can overcome anything! Using his degree, Luke aspires to move to NYC and be a part of the construction team for a huge skyscraper project.

Sophia is graduating 2nd in her class, with a GPA of 4.4. She will double major in Economics and Creative Writing at Miami University. Sophia has been involved in several activities throughout high school, including National Honor Society, Stagecrafters and Swim Team. She is an accomplished swimmer, earning MVP her junior and senior seasons, placing 8th in the Districts for the 50 freestyle and breaking 4 school records! Outside of school, Sophia participated in a Writing Group and Environmental Heroes, worked as a lifeguard and volunteered through the YMCA. Sophia states that her greatest adversity in school is that she was a late reader, something that was quite difficult for her to overcome. Her love of stories pushed her to learn and ironically, she now loves to read and write and plans to pursue a career in the creative writing field. Her perseverance at a young age paid off, allowing her to eventually take CCP courses at Cuyahoga Community College and be recognized through membership in the Tri-C Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Sophia is interested in economics and finance, but also writing and editing. Although her exact career path is yet to be defined, her main goal is to do something creative with her many talents. 

Richard Stuewe Alumni Hall of Fame Memorial Scholarship — established in 2015 by the Fairview Park City Schools Alumni Halls of Fame and renamed in 2019 in memory of Richard Stuewe, friend, colleague and alumni.  The Alumni Hall of Fame committee honors three groups from the Fairview Park City Schools; distinguished alumni, outstanding former athletes, exceptional (retired) faculty. 

The $500 scholarship will be awarded to a senior that is pursuing a degree in the field education.

This year’s recipient is Julie Cook

Julie is graduating 76th in her class with a GPA of 3.3. She will attend Kent State University, studying Early Childhood Education. At FHS, Julie was involved with In Club, Cross Country, Swimming, Indoor Track, and Track & Field. She was selected as captain of the Cross Country team her junior and senior year taking on the responsibility of hosting team runs, planning team bonding activities and working hard as a role model for younger athletes. Her athletic accomplishments earned her the Most Improved Runner Award for Cross Country and the Academic Athlete honor at FHS. As a future educator, Julie has a desire to positively influence and help change the lives of the young children in her classroom. 

Zuhair Jallad Memorial Scholarship—a scholarship was established in 2019 in Zuhair’s name by his family to honor his memory.  Zuhair passed away suddenly at the beginning of his senior year of high school in the fall of 2018.   Zuhair was going to pursue a career in computer science engineering and attend a four-year college.  Zuhair biggest dream was to in some way make a difference in this world.  Students applying for this scholarship should be enrolled in college credit plus courses and show financial need.

The $600 scholarship will be awarded to a student who has demonstrated initiative, self-motivation and a desire to achieve. 

This year’s recipient is Julia Polyak

Julia graduated with a GPA of 3.49 and 62nd in her class. She will attend Mount Union University to study Computer Science. She has been a part of the CCP program at Cuyahoga Community College since Fall 2017, accumulating 60 credit hours and earning her Associate of Arts Degree in May 2020. During high school, Julia participated in Student Council, Basketball, Track, Football (kicker), and Soccer. Julia’s honors include 2nd Team All-Ohio in Soccer, Tri-C Kudos Award and acknowledgement from the district manager at her place of employment. Doing her best, setting goals and having a positive attitude have allowed Julia to accept challenges and succeed in and out of school. Julia aspires to be a software developer/designer and she also hopes to positively influence other females to consider Computer Science careers. 

Robert V. and Rose T. Kundmueller Memorial Scholarship (originally the Robert V. Kundmueller Memorial Scholarship) — was established by the Kundmueller Family in 1990 in memory of Bob Kundmueller.  The scholarship is also in memory of Rose Kundmueller who passed away on November 14, 2014. Bob and Rose became residents of the city of Fairview Park as newlyweds in 1955, raised six children who were educated in the Fairview Park School System, and were local Fairview Park business owners for many years.   Bob was the Education Foundation’s founding treasurer and trustee, involved in numerous civic organizations, and a Fairview Park Citizen of the Year recipient.  Rose was actively involved in the PTA and they both were strong advocates and supporters of the Fairview Park schools.  The scholarship is funded on behalf of the proceeds totaling $108,000 from the Robert V. Kundmueller Memorial Golf Tournament – the Foundation’s original annual fundraiser that occurred for 18 consecutive years.  

The scholarship in the amount of $3,000 is awarded to a student showing outstanding academic achievement as well as community and school participation.  

This year’s recipient is Kathlyn Reilley

Kathlyn is ranked 2nd in her class with a GPA of 4.4. She has been accepted into the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars Program at The Ohio State University where she will study Chemical Engineering. Kathlyn is an exceptional all-around student who embraced the many opportunities offered at FHS. She was a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, Key Club, Chorale, Track, Basketball, and Volleyball. She is a leader among her peers, serving as President of the Student Council Executive Board, Vice President of National Honor Society and Captain of the Volleyball team. Kathlyn is active with Youth of St. Angela’s and she was selected to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Camp in June 2019. She is the recipient of many awards including AP Scholar with Honors, AP Capstone Diploma, Homecoming Court, Academic Letter, Great Lakes Conference Scholar Athlete & Honorable Mention, Academic Athlete, and PTA Art Reflections winner. As a professional, Kathlyn hopes to gain employment in an engineering firm where she can create solutions to environmental issues such as recycling, waste disposal, air purification, and water pollution. She also plans to continue her studies, eventually earning her MBA. 

Lewis F. Mayer Memorial Scholarship—a $500.00 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Fairview High School senior, in memory of Mr. Mayer, a humanitarian of Fairview Park, an educator, a principal and the first superintendent of the Fairview Park City Schools, serving from 1921 to 1964.

This year’s recipient is Colette King

Colette has a GPA of 3.7 and is ranked 37th in her graduating class. She will be attending Kent State University, majoring in Fashion Design. Colette’s high school activities include National Honor Society, Student Council, Student News, and the Spring Musical. She balanced athletic participation in Softball, Soccer and Swimming, while also working part-time. As President of National Honor Society, she succeeded by communicating with others and keeping an open mind to creatively solve problems. Colette is artistically talented, earning numerous awards in photography, digital drawing and painting. She credits the Rotary Youth Leadership Camp that she attended in June 2019, as having a significant impact on her life, especially realizing the positive impact that she can have on the lives of those less fortunate. She would like to continue that activism in the future, forcing change in our world. Along with her pursuit of Fashion, she hopes to also be involved in Film/Theatre, ultimately aspiring to create costumes for theatre or movies.

Richard C. & Louise K Nickerson Memorial Scholarship Established in 2019 through a bequest of funding from the estate of Louise K. Nickerson.  Ms. Nickerson was not able to go to college.  She worked her entire life and realized during that time that future higher education was essential for a successful career. With that in mind, she wanted to establish scholarships to Fairview High School seniors.

Two $1,000 scholarships to be awarded to students who have shown outstanding overall academic/community and school achievement.  One of these scholarships will be for a student attending a two- or four-year college and the other for attending a four year college

This year’s recipients are Martin Lowry and Meghan Weir

Martin earned a GPA of 3.9, ranking 27th in his graduating class. He will attend Otterbein University where he will study nursing and play basketball. Martin was involved with In Club, Show Choir and was one of three males in his class to be inducted into the National Honor Society. Martin is a gifted athlete, excelling in Cross Country, Basketball and Baseball. He is a member of Youth of St. Angela and he also worked throughout high school, including as a Summer Camp Counselor at the Gemini Center. He is a leader among his peers, as evident by him being selected to captain all varsity sports that he participated in. Martin earned the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Scholarship Society Certificate, Academic Athlete and numerous other athletic awards. Martin’s long range professional goal is to enter Otterbein’s graduate program and become a nurse anesthetist. He looks forward to working in the operating room of a busy trauma center, following in his mother’s footsteps. 

Meghan holds a 4.4 GPA, ranking her 3rd among graduates. She will be attending The Ohio State University with her major to be decided. Meghan was a member of National Honor Society, Student Council and Yearbook. She is also an outstanding athlete, excelling in Soccer and Basketball where she earned such honors as Academic Athlete, Scholar Athlete, Defensive Player of the Year in Basketball, All-Conference in Soccer and Basketball, 2nd Team All-PAC in Soccer, and Greater Cleveland Honorable Mention in Soccer. She volunteers in the community through Meals on Wheels and with youth athletic camps, in addition to working at the Gemini Center Kids Club and the Puritas Baseball Complex. Although her major is undecided at this time, she has taken numerous AP and CCP courses and is well prepared to succeed, likely in a STEM career, possibly concentrating in dermatology or neuroscience. 

Nelson Russ Memorial Scholarshipestablished in 2001 by Mrs. Fern Russ, in memory of her late husband, Nelson.  Mr. Russ served as the Recreational Director for Fairview Park, served on the Fairview Park City Council and was one of our City’s Citizens of the Year.  Mr. Russ served three decades on the faculty at Fairview High and distinguished himself as Fairview High School’s first Varsity football coach. 

The $500.00 scholarship is given for academic and athletic excellence, preferably in the sport of football. 

This year’s recipient is Collin Jenkins

Collin graduates 51st in his class with a GPA of 3.5. He will be attending Cleveland State University, studying Health Sciences. During his time at FHS, Collin was involved in Tri-M Music Honor Society, Because I said I Would, Football, and Wrestling. His proudest moment in high school was being selected to captain the Varsity Football Team. Qualities such as discipline, dedication, commitment, and responsibility allowed him to assume this role and lead his teammates. He was also named Football Offensive Lineman of the Year and earned the FHS Football John C. Haney Award. Collin hopes to complete the Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program at CSU, initially working in outpatient or inpatient Physical Therapy, and eventually moving towards Home Health Physical Therapy.
