School Community Garden Project
A Foundation grant awarded to Chris Sawicki, Steve Ruic and Laura Ryals for Lewis F. Mayer Middle School and Fairview High School.  The grant was targeted for students with special needs who will prepare, plant and harvest herbs, vegetables and flowers from a plot they have secured in the Fairview Park Community Garden. Academically all areas of science will be addressed with this project along with some math concepts and pre-vocational tasks such as sequencing, time management, following directions, tool use and problem solving.

Olweus Bullying Prevention Program
A Foundation grant awarded to Mary Cory for Gilles-Sweet Elementary School and Lewis F. Mayer Middle School. The grant provided for a bullying prevention program for students as well as a two day staff training session. The program is designed to improve peer relations and make school safer, more positive places for students to learn and develop. This will be an ongoing program used in the school district.

Fairview High School Math Teachers NSpire Students
A Foundation grant awarded to Kim Armstrong, Anne Dance, Eric Korey, Heather Lechowicz, and Will Morrison for Fairview High School.  The grant provided the FHS Math Department to purchase TI-NSpire graphing calculators to be used by Algebra 1 and Geometry students. A graphing calculator helps students visualize math concepts in a way that will contribute to their growing skill sets. Results in learning to use these calculators will increase the number of students passing the Ohio Graduation Test, help the students deepen their understanding in the core areas, especially the math standards and give them a solid mathematical foundation for upper level math and science courses and college admission tests.

Follow the Drinking Gourd
A Foundation partial grant awarded to Diane Ward for Gilles-Sweet Elementary School.  This grant provides the use of the CosmOdyssey, a portable planetarium from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History for a week . Classrooms will sit in the theater like atmosphere of the dome and gaze into the night sky while being read the book Follow the Drinking Gourd by Jeanette Winter.   This project is done in conjunction with Black History Month in February and educates the students about slavery and how they used the stars to guide them to freedom.

Manipulating Mathematics
A Foundation grant awarded to Matthew Ziemnik for Lewis F. Mayer Middle School. The grant provides using math manipulatives in the classroom to teach 8th grade students how to incorporate them into many of the lessons and provide a more superior academic program and will help to boost our math scores on the Ohio Achievement Test. The manipulatives give the students a more hands on experience and the materials will be used for many years.

P.L.A.Y. Project Literacy Awareness for Young Children
A Foundation grant awarded to Melissa Koenig for Parkview Early Education Center. This is a program that promotes phonological awareness, print awareness and language usage for Kindergarten students. Backpacks are used to carry a selected book, suggested questions, a craft, a listening activity, a math activity, a song or rhyme and a cooking activity home with the students who take this home every other week to work on at home with their parents. This program allows Kindergarten students to master early literacy skills and better prepare them for the first grade.

Word Nerd Writing Workshop
