1986 was the year that the Education Foundation’s established their first scholarship. Since then we have been awarding scholarships to outstanding Fairview High School seniors. This year, the Foundation proudly awards the following 23 scholarships totaling $24,000:

Dr. John Babel Memorial Scholarship: Established in 2016 in honor of the 3rd Superintendent of the school system, Dr. John Babel Jr. Dr. Babel was born in upstate New York, and upon his high school graduation was intent on staying on the farm.  Upon encouragement from his father, he attended a two-year agricultural college.  As a result of the advice from his high school teacher he continued with his schooling and pursued his teaching certification and later his Masters at Cornell University.  He was first in his family to attain a college degree and continued on to complete his PhD from The Ohio State University.  He taught at Cleveland State University for 25 years and was a member of the Rotarian Club for over 35 years. Dr. Babel’s life was changed by those in education, and he believed in the value of lifelong learning.

The $1,000.00 scholarship is being awarded to a senior who will pursue a career in education.

Our winner is Anna Calmer.

Frank W. Barr Memorial Scholarship:  Established in 1990 in honor of the 2 nd Superintendent of the school system who served from 1964 to 1979. Dr. Barr was a member of many professional educational organizations as well as a member of many community groups.

Our recipient is a young lady who has done extremely well at Fairview High. She is ranked 8th in her class and is currently carrying 4.25 GPA. She has taken AP classes at FHS and numerous post secondary classes at Tri C. She has received acceptance letters from Xavier, Miami, and John Carroll University. Presently, her topic choice is Miami University where she will pursue a degree in Forensic Psychology. She is also a member of National Honor Society and has been a valuable athlete of both the Girl’s Varsity Soccer and Softball Teams. She was named Scholar Athlete of the year for the Girl’s Soccer Team this past season. When making decisions our winner feels that her guiding principles are her, honesty, treating others with respect, staying true to herself, and persevering even when times get tough. She sees her best strength as her kindness. As she say, “ I am always kind to people that I may encounter because you never know what one is going through at any point in their life. I never judge anyone and always give someone a second chance.” A major goal that our recipient wants to achieve in the next ten years is to get involved in a charity. “ I have always had a love for helping other people.”

Our winner is Kailee Thadeus.

Mary Lou Chalfant Memorial Social Studies Scholarship:  Mary Lou was a social studies teacher at Fairview High School for many years. She retired from the Fairview Park Schools and after her retirement established this scholarship.

Our recipient of this scholarship is a young lady who is an extremely busy individual. In school she is a member of National Honor Society, Student Government, Chamber Orchestra, and the Synchronettes. She has also been a 4 year member of the swim team and a 3 time letter winner. Out of school she is involved in Girl Scouts, has been a life guard and pool supervisor and works in childcare. She has received numerous academic and athletic awards in her 4 years at Fairview. Her peers and advisors have told her that a skill she has that sets her apart from other people is her ability to rally people together through positivity and enthusiasm. As she says, “ I agree with my peers. My positivity inspires and motivates me. I enjoy sharing these qualities with others in the hope that they too will adopt passionate and positive mindsets.” This young lady will be attending Ohio University in the Fall where she will pursue a degree in Education focusing on Integrated Social Studies.

Our winner is Gwyneth Howard.

Bruce Linden Cherkala Memorial Scholarship:   Established in 1991 by the Cherkala family as a memory to their son, Bruce, who graduated from Fairview High School in 1968. While at FHS, Bruce was an honor student, letterman in football and tennis. Bruce went on to graduate from Denison University and then Case Western Reserve School of Medicine with a M.D. degree. Bruce passed away suddenly in 1982.

Our award winner for the BLC Mem. Sch. Is a young lady who has been very active in her high school career Not only is she ranked 21st in her class and has a 3.98 GPA, but she has also been in student government, Key Club and National Honor Society. She has participated on the athletic field as well, by being a member of the Cross Country Team, Track and Field Team, and Swimming and Diving Team. When not involved I n a school function, she volunteers at Fairview Hospital, or works as a lifeguard, lifeguard supervisor, or swim instructor. Our recipient will be attending Ursuline College in the fall pursuing a degree in Nursing.

When it comes to leadership qualities, our winner feels she leads best by being a “silent” leader or one who leads by example .She say; “ I don’t try to boss people around to get things done. I work hard at the tasks at hand, not socialize too much, and I don’t quit until the job is done.” She also sees her two greatest strengths as her ability to focus on the job/task at hand and her perseverance towards her goals. Her perseverance strength was tested her junior year when she suffered two concussions in swimming. This trauma caused her to lose her focus on school work and prevented her from working. It took several long moths of hard work and listening to her trainer and doctor for her to get better. Today, she is completely recovered. In the next ten years, she hopes to earn her Masters of Science in Nursing and become a nurse practitioner.

Our winner is Sarah Guerry

Coca Cola Scholarship:  Established in 2007 through the Coca Cola Bottling Company. This year we have two $1,000.00 scholarships to be awarded. Criteria for these scholarships are overall academic/community and school achievement.

The first of our two winners of this scholarship is an energetic young lady who ranks #2 in her class. She has taken 7 AP classes and 3 Post Secondary classes through Tri C. She is a member of the Pit Orchestra, National Honor Society, Chamber Orchestra, and the Academic Team. She has participated in Cross Country and Track and Field. Outside of school, she is a member of the Cleveland Women’s Orchestra, and is very active in her church playing Handbells and Acolything. Her work experiences are playing Viola for Sola Fide Choir and playing viola in a quartet at weddings. Our recipient also possess leadership abilities as seen in her role as section leader of chamber orchestra. She was vice president her junior year and is currently President. As section leader she helps the other member with adjusting volume and pitch, bowings, and rhythms or fingerings of their instruments.

Our winner has also received a number of awards throughout her high school career. A few of these awards are: Dean’s List(Maintaining a 4.0 GPA each semester), Principal’s Academic Medal, Student of the month, AP Scholar with Honors ( having a score of 3.25 or higher on all AP exams)Scholar athlete Award( senior with highest GPA on Girl’s Cross Country Team, and Warrior Award. She sees her two greatest strengths as her ability to focus and her dedication. One of the most significant events in her life was starting middle school. Here she began doing sports and taking private lessons on the viola. This helped her to form new friendships, learn new skills, and learn to manage her time. This set a solid foundation for her to carry these traits over in high school and continue to refine her social skills, dedication to her craft and perseverance. Our winner will be attending Cleveland State in the Fall and will pursue a degree in Biology.

Our 1st winner is Alexis Brown

Our 2nd winner is just as busy as our 1st winner. For the last 4 years our recipient has been class president with student government. She is a member of National Honor Society, and for two years she has been editor of the Yearbook. On the athletic field, she has been a 4 year member of the girl’s soccer team and played basketball for two years .Outside of school, she is active in Girl Scouts, and has been a volunteer sports coach for the Fairview Park Rec. Dept(coaching soccer and basketball). Her work experiences include working as a Server at Dari View Ice Cream Shop, a Chiropractic Assistance for Leonard Chiropractic, and a referee and scorekeeper for the Fairview Park recreation Dept.

She sees her two strongest strengths as her relentless work ethic and her ability to communicate with people on a personal level. As she says, “My communication skills have helped me develop good relationships with teachers and my peers. Without these strong and positive relationships. I would not have become the successful student I am today.”

The moment she is most proud of in high school is having been Class president this year and leading the seniors to a Red Day victory. Red Day is Fairview High’s Spirit Day. She was excited to see the class rally together and win the day knowing she had played a part in causing all that excitement and positivity. In the future, our winner wants to travel and try new experiences that may not be available to her if she stayed in Fairview. She says; “I think will help diversify my life, broaden my horizons and gain a better understanding of the world around me.

Our 2nd winner is Molly Tarase.

Maureen Cundiff Memorial Scholarship: Established as a scholarship in 2007 through donations made by community and friends for the Cundiff Family. Maureen was a very active person in the community, including being a member of the board of education, president of PTA, member of the Gemini Committee and many more organizations. She gave so much of herself to her family and community that having a scholarship in her memory is a wonderful way to remember her.

Our winner of this scholarship has had an exceptional career at FHS. Not only has she completed her high school curriculum, she has also taken numerous Post Secondary classes at both Tri C and Cleveland State University. She is a member of National Honor Society, Student Council Class Treasurer, and Student Council Executive Board Treasurer. She has been a Varsity Soccer, Varsity Basketball, and Varsity Softball player. She has been a Scholar Athlete Award winner, has been on the Honor Roll, and was Softball Team MVP in 2015 and 2016. One of the most significant events in her life was being part of the MLB Reviving Baseball in the Inner City softball world series. The team she plays for The Cleveland Baseball Federation fast pitch softball team made it to the World Series. Because of RBI, she has been able to visit other cities, and meet and become friends with other girls across the country.

Our recipient will be attending Shawnee State University in the Fall. She has received a scholarship to play softball there, and will be majoring in Occupational Therapy.

Our winner is Maureen Wolansky.

Laura Dean Scholarship Memorial Scholarship:  Established in March 2001 through a bequest of funding from the estate of a former Fairview Park teacher and former Fairview High principal, Laura Dean. Ms. Dean’s teaching and administrative career in the Fairview Park Schools began in 1929 and lasted for 45 years. Her first assignment was teaching mathematics to elementary students and later serving as the second principal of Fairview High School. It was at her request that the scholarship awards be given to young women pursuing careers in mathematics or in the field of applied mathematics.

Our 1st recipient of the Laura Dean Scholarship is a young lady who ranks 11th in her class and carries a 4.23 GPA. She will be attending The Ohio State University in the Fall while pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Astronomy. She choose Ohio State because as she states, “OSU has a very strong engineering program and offers numerous co=op and internship opportunities for work experience.” She plans on working during college to assist in paying for her books and tuition fees.

Our recipient is a member of Key Club, co-editor of the Yearbook( junior and senior year), and treasurer of both Student Council and National Honor Society. She has participated in Girl’s Soccer for three years and has been a member of the Girl’s Track and Field team for 4 years, and has capped off her athletic career at FHS by being a 4 year member of the Girl’s swim team, Captain of the Girl’s swim Team and two time MVP. She has also found time to caddie for awhile at Westwood Country Club, and currently works at Dominic’s Santos Restaurant. She has been an 11 time scholar Athlete, Student of the Month twice, and Student of the Quarter once. She was awarded the Warrior Award 3 times in Track and Field and was a member of Scarlet Senior Court. She sees her greatest strengths as confidence and dedication. As she says, “ I am a very career driven person and I intend to maintain my focus on my college education, my future job and in improving myself”.

Our  1st winner is Zoe Karabinus.

Our 2nd recipient of the Laura Dean Scholarship is a student who has taken numerous AP courses at FHS and 10 Post Secondary classes. While carrying this extremely difficult class load, she found time to be involved in a number of extra curricular, athletic, and out of school activities. In school our winner was involved in Key Club, Student Government, National Honor Society, Show Choir, Chorale, Stagecrafters, Yearbook and President’s Club. In athletics she was on the Girl’s Basketball team, was member of the Track and Field Team, Member of the Girl’s Cross Country team, and a member of the Girl’s swim team. In Track and Field, Swimming, and Cross Country, our winner was the Academic Athlete award winner and she also won numerous Varsity Letters for her participation in sports. Out side of school, this young lady was a Lifeguard and swim instructor at the Gemini Center and was also a Kid’s Club Attendant. Our recipient feels her two greatest strengths are her motivation and unwavering confidence. One of her brightest moments at FHS has been when she performed the National Anthem at the Cleveland Cavaliers games the last three years with the Fairview High School Chorale.

Our winner ranks 9th in her class and carries a 4.25 GPA. She will attend Ursuline College in the Fall and pursue a degree in Nursing. As she says, “ I intend to attend Ursuline College because it is an institution based on service. Leadership, and women centered learning which I believe will help me in achieving my life and career goals of becoming a critical care nurse and eventually a Nurse Anesthetist. Upon graduation our winner hopes to join the Navy Nurse’s Corp.

Our 2nd winner is Kathryn Malloy.

Shirley Docherty Memorial Scholarship: Established in 2013 by her children Denise Devine and David in memory of their mother Shirley Docherty. Shirley was a homemaker most of her life but after she graduated high school she drew maps for the War Department. After the war, she was employed for NACA, (now known as NASA) were she worked as a graphic artist in the Aircraft Engine Research Lab.   This $500 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding art student pursuing a degree in Art/Graphic Arts at a college or university.

The winner of the Shirley Docherty Memorial Scholarship Is a young man who has chosen Cleveland State University as his college of choice as he pursues a degree in Engineering. He enjoys athletics as seen by his involvement in football, basketball and track. He also enjoys weightlifting (winning the football Iron Man MVP Award) and running to stay in shape and loves to draw and be involved in graphic arts. He plans to work during college as he knows he has to pay for part of his education.

Our winner has faced adversity in high school. During his junior year, he broke his leg in football and was not expected to make full recovery. However, through a strenuous lifting and rehabbing program, our winner completely recovered and became the strongest player on the football team the next year. That is one of his proudest moments in high school because it showed him that by working hard and not giving up in the face of adversity that one can over come and be successful.

Our winner is Ryan Provenza.

Maxine Field Memorial Scholarship: Established in 2016 by the Field children in memory of their mother Maxine A. Field (nee Waack). Maxine was a proud resident of Fairview Park. She graduated from FHS in 1948 where she was head majorette for the marching band. Also in 1948 she represented Fairview Park and the state of Ohio as Miss Ohio in the Miss America pageant held in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

After marrying Roland Field, they built a home and raised a family in Fairview Park.  In 1966 Maxine again represented Fairview Park and Ohio as Mrs. Ohio in the Mrs. America pageant held in San Diego, California. Maxine was a model and fashion coordinator for many local stores and malls. She also enjoyed singing, dancing and the theater where she acted in many local little theater productions and musicals.

Maxine continued to enjoy activities, especially Jazzercise, up to shortly before her passing at the age of 84.

This year’s recipient of the Maxine Field Award is a young lady who is very talented in the field of music. She is also a very bright young lady having taken 13 Post Secondary classes at Tri C along with her regular curriculum at FHS. She is ranked 10th in her class and carries a 4.24 GPA. She will attending Belmont University in the Fall Majoring in Music Business. As she states: “ I will be attending Belmont because it has an outstanding program for my unique major, and it has many opportunities in the music business and in Nashville”. Our winner has been busy in school as she is a member Show Choir, National Honor Society, Student Government, and Stagecrafters. She has held a number of leadership positions in these organizations, (ie Executive Board President of Student Government, Vice President of her class freshman, sophomore and junior year, President of Stagecrafters, and President of Show Choir and Chorale. Outside of school, our winner is a member of the Singing Angels and is also active in her church choir.

Our recipient feels her greatest attributes are her determination, an openness to trying new things, and her ability to communicate and motivate people to get things accomplished. One of her most proudest moments in high school was just a few months ago when she had to step in and play the role of Cinderella in Spring Musical. As she says, “ I wasn’t prepared to play this part, but I pulled myself together and tried to put on a good show”. We had a great night and we were all successful.

Our winner feels that joining the Signing Angels has helped her grow as a singer, a performer, and as person. “ I would not be where I am today, if I had not joined the Signing Angels”.

Our winner is Claire Karliak.

Dorothy Graab Memorial Scholarship:  Established in 2013 by children Donald and Janet Graab Miller in memory of their mother Dorothy Graab. She graduated from Warwood High School in West Virginia where she played oboe and glockenspiel in the band and graduated as the valedictorian in 1944. After graduation, she enrolled at Northwestern University where she majored in chemistry.  Dorothy continued to study piano until graduation in 1948. In 1948 she joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), a forerunner of NASA, as a chemist at the Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dorothy was an active volunteer in civic and community groups. She served as PTA president multiple times and was an elected school board member, ultimately serving as president of the Fairview Park School Board.  A lifelong lover of music, Dorothy was an accomplished piano player who took great pleasure and pride over the years in supporting the Cleveland Orchestra.

Our recipient is a young lady who is a member of Mosiac Club, Key Club, Stage crafters, Chorale and Show Choir. Outside of school, she is active in Girl Scouts, and her Youth Group( holding the position of Mission Leader) at Rockport United Methodist Church. As she says; I feel I am a good leader because I am passionate and confident in all that I do.” This year she has been helping out Mrs. Karliak, Vocal Teacher at FHS, with her middle school choir classes. “ I help the students by picking up their music and singing along with them so they can be confident in singing the right notes.” I am very passionate about helping in these classes because I want them to realize their full potential and to have some fun and become more confident singers.

Her proudest moment was when she got a role in her first musical, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. She had practices her audition for weeks, and knew the competition would be tough. When the cast list went up and she saw her name on it, she was so excited. She now knew she would be one of those people up on stage in front of an audience giving people joy and an escape from the real world for just a few hours. As she tells us, ‘the only way I can describe how I felt at that moment is Magical. Being in that show gave me Confidence.

Our winner will be attending Akron University in the fall, pursuing a degree in BioMedical Engineering.

Our winner is Rebecca Magda.

Judson Graab Memorial Scholarship: Established in 2013 by children Donald and Janet Graab Miller in memory of their father Judson Graab. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University where he majored in chemistry. Judson's time at Ohio Wesleyan was interrupted by his service in the US Army during World War II. Upon graduation in 1948 he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), a forerunner of NASA, as a chemist at the Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Judson remained at NASA for his entire career, serving as the longtime head of the analytical chemistry department and he retired in 1978.

Judson was also part of the team of parents who created the Fairview Park Band Boosters and establishing the annual Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast. Upon his retirement, Judson worked with the Fairview High School auto shop as a volunteer. His continued support was acknowledged by the Fairview Park Education Association with their Friend of Education award in 1992.

Our winner of the Judson Graab Memorial Scholarship is a young man who will be attending The Ohio State University in the Fall and majoring in Chemical Engineering. He is the #1 ranked student in this year’s graduation class and is carrying a 4.68 GPA. Our recipient is interested in the research and development areas of his major and he plans on continuing his education working towards a Ph.D and eventually doing research and possibly teaching at the college level. He has taken 13 AP classes at FHS and a combination of 5 Post Secondary classes at Tri C and Case Western Reserve University.

Our recipient is Executive Vice President of Student Government, President of National Honor Society, and Captain of the Academic Team. He is active in his church youth group and last spring he became involved with the Hy-tech Club at Hyland Software. He was chosen as one in a select group of students to participate in specialized training in computer programing and coding for Hyland Software. This young man has also received a number of recognitions during his high school years. The list is extensive, so I will only name a few: He has been a National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, National AP Scholar, and a Phi Beta Kappa Award Recipient.

Our winner feels his two best strengths are his diligence and problem solving skills. As he states:” Not only am I totally willing to sit down and grind through a long, and difficult assignment, but I am also capable of gathering, evaluating, and consolidating information and facts into a workable, implementable solution.” Still with all that is going on in his life, our recipient is “grounded in “ family values. He knows that he has been given a gift of love and encouragement by his family, teachers and friends and this has helped him to achieve many of his goals.

Our winner is Ethan Zuccola.

Fred J. and Betty J. Helwig Scholarship:  A scholarship was given in the names of their parents’ honor by the Helwig children. The scholarship was created in 1999 and funded each year by the Helwig children. The scholarships are awarded to hard-working students who demonstrate initiative, self-motivation and a desire to achieve. In addition to the scholarship award, the scholarship recipient’s names will be added to a permanent plaque that hangs in the Fairview High School halls to commemorate this award.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded and are renewable for up to a maximum of four years of college.

Our 1st recipient is a young lady who has been active in Student Government, Key Club, Mosaic Club, and National Honor Society. She has taken numerous AP courses at Fairview High School and post secondary classes in college. She has worked as a Good Shepard Aide(aide in religious education classes at her church, as well as a leader in the Children’s Liturgy classes at her church and she is a member of the Way Group(her high school Youth Group) which she feels has helped her to grow and develop into a more open and understanding individual.

Our recipient plans to work during college at least through study program because she knows she will have to pay for her own college education. As she says, “ I am not afraid of hard work….I work hard everyday because I know nothing is given in life. Life will give me challenges but I will meet them head on and find my own way to succeed.”

Our winner wants to attend Case Western Reserve University in the fall and Major in Neuroscience. Her passion for this major stems from the fact that she suffered a perinatal stroke. She has to work twice as hard as others to succeed. Our winner is ranked 6th in her class and carries a 4.33 GPA.

Our 1st winner is Miss Hannah Greenland.

Our 2nd recipient is another young lady who has taken AP courses at FHS and Post Secondary classes at Tri C. She has been active in Key Club, Mosaic Club and in Stagecrafters. She has participated in Volleyball and has and has also worked at Heinen’s grocery store in Rocky River. Our recipient has been the winner of the Athletic Scholar Award for volleyball her Freshman and Sophomore years’’ , and in addition to that she has received the Academic Honor award all 4 years’ in high school, is on Honor Roll, and is scheduled to graduate with an Honor’s diploma.

As our first winner overcame adversity in her life, so has our second recipient with the sudden and unexpected passing of her father last March. This event caused our winner to change her whole perspective on life. As she states.” I learned to cherish every moment with my family and friends because you never know what might happen. I also learned to never give up and always do my best”.

Our winner has been accepted at Ohio University aand will start college there in the fall majoring in Family and Child Studies.

Our 2nd winner is Miss Alison Biehl.

Hall of Fame Scholarship:  Established in 2015 by the Fairview Park Schools Halls of Fame. The Hall of Fame committee honors three groups from the Fairview Park Public Schools; distinguished alumni, outstanding former athletes, exceptional (retired) faculty.

Our Hall of Fame Scholarship recipient is very passionate about his career goal. He wants to get a degree in Special Education. He is currently the leader of a group at Fairview High School called the In Club. The In Club is a group of students that volunteer their time with the special needs students. Our winner says he knew the minute he met a young man by the name of Rocco that he wanted to help young people with special needs.

A moment that our winner says is the high light of his high school experience is when the past president of the In Club asked him to be the next leader of the group. As he states,” That was such a proud moment for me because I was acknowledged for doing what I love most; helping out people with special needs.”

Our recipient will attend St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn, New York this fall. He choose St. Joseph’s College because at the completion of his studies he will receive certification in 4 different areas. This will help make him a more employable candidate when looking for his 1st job. One of his personal goals in the next ten years is to continue his education and earn a Master’s Degree in Special Education.

Our winner is Patrick Weaver.

Mary Hoertz Memorial Scholarship:  A $250.00 scholarship is given to a graduating senior who has shown leadership, community involvement, school participation and academic ability.

This year’s recipient of this scholarship is a young man who gives a great deal of his times to others. While carrying a 3.8 GPA and ranking 30th in his class, he has also managed to take 8 Advanced Placement (AP) courses at FHS. In the Fall he wants to attend Ohio State University and possible major in Journalism. When not attending classes, our winner can be found volunteering as a Safety Town instructor, or volunteering at the Cleveland Food Bank or St Malachi Soup Kitchen, or volunteering at Fairview Hospital. If not at any one of these places, you might find him volunteering for Boy Scout Troop 225 of which he is an active member and also finishing up on his Eagle Scout Service Project.

Our winner feels his leadership skills were tested extensively when he was made Senior Patrol Leader which meant he was in charge of all boys in the troop and had to coordinate all the troop events for 6 months. He feel his two greatest strengths are his ability to simplify things so people can easily understand them and his communication skills. He also feels he has a good sense of humor and that makes people around him feel at ease.

Our winner is James Von Pless.

Michael Holick Memorial Scholarship:  This $500.00 scholarship was established in 2008 by the Holick family. Michael Holick was proud to be a resident of Fairview Park for 56 years and loved his community. He was married to Jeanne in 1951 and his four children are all graduates of Fairview High School. His talents as a master finish carpenter for 56 years are appreciated today as he is responsible for building his family home and homes for his children in Fairview Park, in addition to rebuilding the corner of West 204 th Street and Lorain Road. He was also involved with many building, renovating and remodeling projects in the Cleveland vicinity.  Michael was an active member of the Carpenters Local Union 1108 and the memory of his talents, love and support of his family and pride in his city will shine forever.

Our recipient of this scholarship is a busy young man. He currently ranks 40th in his class and is earning a 3.56 GPA. Along with his high school curriculum, he has taken 8 Post Secondary classes. He has been a 4 year letter winner in both Varsity Golf and Varsity Baseball. He is active in Boy Scouts troup 401 where he earned the rank of eagle Scout in 2014, he also is active in the community summer fest program. Our winner has earned a number of awards during high school. A few of them are: MVP for the Varsity Golf team 2016, Eagle Scout , Patriot Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete Award 2016, Fairview High School Academic Scholar, PTA reflections winner 4 times; 3 photography pieces and 1 short film, and he has been featured in the Fairview Park Magazine. Our winner also sees his two greatest strengths as his drive and perseverance. As he states, “ Drive is what gets me to my goals and perseverance keeps me there.” One of his proudest moments in high school was when he won the state wide video contest. As he says, “ It felt amazing to win something on this level, yet not only for myself but for Fairview High School. I was so proud to represent Fairview Park down in Columbus. One of his main goals in life is to make a positive impact on society. Knowing that I made a difference would be one of the greatest things I could ever achieve in life. Our winner will be attending Baldwin Wallace University in the Fall pursuing a Business Major and Communications Minor.

Robert V. and Rose T. Kundmueller Memorial Scholarship:  (originally the Robert V. Kundmueller Memorial Scholarship) Established by the Kundmueller Family in 1990 in memory of Bob Kundmueller.  The scholarship is also in memory of Rose Kundmueller who passed away on November 14, 2014.

Bob and Rose became residents of the city of Fairview Park as newlyweds in 1955, raised six children who were educated in the Fairview Park School System, and were local Fairview Park business owners for many years.

Bob was the Foundation’s founding treasurer and trustee, involved in numerous civic organizations, and a Fairview Park Citizen of the Year recipient.  Rose was actively involved in the PTA and they both were strong advocates and supporters of the Fairview Park schools.

The scholarship is funded on behalf of the proceeds totaling $108,000 from the Robert V. Kundmueller Memorial Golf Tournament – the Foundation’s annual fundraiser that occurred for 18 consecutive years.

This year’s recipient is a very involved student both in and out of school and in her community. She is a member of National Honor Society, Key Club, Mosaic Club, and a volunteer math tutor at the high school. In addition to her extra curricular activities, she has also played JV and Varsity Volleyball, JV and Varsity basketball, and has been a 4 year Track and Field participant. Out side of school our winner has been a Volunteer Sunday School Teacher Aide and Altar server at St Angelia Merici church, a Fairview Hospital volunteer, and a volunteer community meal preparer and server at St. Patrick’s church and St. Angela’s On top of all of this, she has worked part time in the family business, and has worked at Dar’s dairy delight. Our winner, who is third in her class and is carrying a 4.43 grade point average, hopes to attend Case Western Reserve University and major in Biomedical Engineering. She wants to make significant contributions towards medical technology, to help ease human suffering, and to improve the quality of life of her patients..

Lewis F. Mayer Memorial Scholarship:  A $500.00 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Fairview High School senior, in memory of Mr. Mayer, a humanitarian of Fairview Park, an educator, principal and the first superintendent of the Fairview Park Schools, serving from 1921 to 1964.

Our winner of the LFM Memorial Scholarship is a young man who wants to serve his community. He has taken a number of Honors courses at Fairview HS along with Post Secondary classes at a local college. He is also attending Polaris Career Center where he is taking classes in their Criminal Justice Program. At Fairview HS he was member of the band, while at Polaris he is a Polaris Class Officer holding the position of President, and a member of the National Technical Honor Society. He has been a Varsity Golf team member the last 3 years, and a Church Usher and Lector and for the past 7 years he has been involved in the Boy Scouts attaining the level of Eagle Scout. He plans to work as a campus security guard while attending BGSU. He feels his two most important strengths are his leadership abilities and his kindness. He feels his leadership abilities are evident by his being Class President of his Criminal Justice Class, and his role as a leader and Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts. He says he is a kind person and that his kindness helps other feel more comfortable approaching him. In the next ten years our winner wants to have graduated from the police academy and become a police officer. Another goal is as he says, “ I want to give back to my community in which I live. I may coach my childrens’ s sports teams or do community service through my police department role.

Medical Mutual Scholarship:  This $500.00 scholarship was established in 2008 and is made available through the Health Insurance Plan that the Fairview Park City School District participates in. This is a yearly scholarship awarded to a student with both a combined outstanding academic achievement and economic need.

The recipient of this scholarship currently ranks #5 in her class and is carrying a 4.34 GPA. Along with her regular FHS curriculum, she has taken 4 AP courses and 7 Post Secondary classes. She is a member of String Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and National Honor Society. When not in school you can find her volunteering at Fairview Hospital or playing in the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra (Philharmonica Orchestra). To earn money, she tutors students and works for DPT Services which is an office building cleaning service. She plans on working will attending college because as she says, “ I will need to work to help pay my tuition, to help pay for textbooks, or to help pay for other necessities I might need while going to school.

Our winner says her top two strengths are time management and her ability to reason problems out and come to a workable solution that benefits everyone. After careful consideration and weighing all the options of the 5 colleges she applied to, our winner will be attending Ohio State University this Fall majoring in Biology. As she says, “ Ohio State has an excellent reputation for their pre-medicine program of which I have already been accepted into, and therefore affords me the best opportunity to attend medical school after my undergraduate studies.”

Nicoloff and Thoma Memorial Scholarship:  This $500.00 scholarship has been ongoing for many years with the Business Advisory Council, but beginning in 2008, it was named in memory of Richard Nicoloff. Richard passed away suddenly in September of 2007 and was a strong proponent of education. He held two master degrees and had a career in banking that took place at the Cleveland branch of the Federal Reserve and at National City Bank. Two of his children are graduates of Fairview High School and his wife Judy is a long time member of many community organizations in Fairview Park. Pauline Thoma (Judy’s mother) passed away in 2015 and was added to this memorial scholarship. She was a journalist for over 50 years with the Plain Dealer. She held many distinctions during her career which included inducted into the Journalism Hall of Fame in 1993, was on the executive board of the Newspapers Guild, served as treasurer of the Theta Sigma Phi (Women in Communications), served on the Board of Directors of Sigma Delta Chi (Society of Professional Journalists) and Treasurer of the Cleveland Press Club.

The winner of the Nicoloff& Thoma scholarship is a young man who ranks 19th in his class and is currently carrying a 4.1 GPA. He has narrowed down his two college choices to Cleveland State or Ohio University because they offer the best program for his intended major which is Computer Science of Actuarial Sciences. Our recipient has played high school soccer for four years, has worked at Fairview Park Winter Fest, the Achievement Center for children putting on soccer clinics, and has volunteered at the Fairview Park Hazardous Waste and shredding Days. He has also received Student Athlete Awards all 4 years of high school, made the Principal’s List all 4 years of high school, and he is most proud of his winning first place in the Stand up for Ohio Public Schools Video Contest. The ability to keep an optimistic mindset and a strong work ethic are his two greatest strengths. In the future our winner wants to engage himself more in the field of videos and creative film making, make an impact on the world , and to simply make others happy.

Nelson Russ Memorial Scholarship:  Established in 2001 by Mrs. Fern Russ, in memory of her late husband, Nelson. Mr. Russ served as the Recreational Director for Fairview Park, served on the Fairview Park City Council and was one of our City’s Citizens of the Year. Mr. Russ served three decades on the faculty at Fairview High and distinguished himself as Fairview High School’s first Varsity football coach.

This year’s recipient of the Nelson Russ Memorial Scholarship has had an outstanding athletic career at FHS .He has played Varsity Football, Varsity Basketball, and has participated in Varsity Track and Field. He has also found time to be a volunteer worker for the Susan B. Anthony Race for the Cure, the Cleveland Food Bank, and help out as a volunteer in a cancer fundraiser..Friends Helping Friends.

As a student athlete our winner has received numerous awards. He was Captain of the football team (12), PAC All conference 1st team defense(11), Offensive MVP (12), Defensive MVP (11), East West High School All Star Football (12), 3 year letter winner in football, 3 year letter winner in basketball, MVP (12), Captain of both the Varsity Football and Basketball teams, (12) Regional qualifier in Track and Field, 2 year Varsity letter winner, and Academic Athlete every season for every sport played.

Our recipient feels his two greatest strengths are his work ethic and his leadership ability. As he says, “ I am a person who will take initiative and do what it takes to get the job done”. “ I think these attributes are event in the number of academic and athletic awards I have earned over my high school career.” Caption both Football and Basketball and MVP both Football and Basketball his senior year.

He plans on attending Cleveland State University in the Fall and majoring in Physical Therapy.
