FAIRVIEW PARK EDUCATION FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES Fall 2021 GRANT AWARDS

Fairview Park, Ohio – On December 7, 2021 the Fairview Park Education Foundation Board of Trustees approved $6,109 in grant awards for teachers of the Fairview Park City Schools.  The awarded grants:

$100 has been awarded to Occupational Therapist Monica Owen and School Psychologist Megan Wellman for the purchase of materials to construct weighted lap pads and weighted scarves.  These weighted items help children struggling with sensory integration to “integrate the sensory input from the environment” and become more able to participate in academic tasks.

$720 has been awarded to Gillis-Sweet teachers, Mary Jo Cooper, Jessica Potraffke and Kerry Sheldon for their grant “Story Walk”.  This grant will allow for the purchase of books and supplies to create an outdoor story walk for the students and community to enjoy. The story walk consists of pages of a story, in individual panels, placed around the school.

$1140 has been awarded to Andy Slack and Lori Oxley, Mayer Middle School and Fairview High School teachers for their grant “Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking Skills Challenges”. “The purpose of this project is for students to learn critical thinking skills that can be applied to real world problems and challenges.  Additionally, to help students and parents bridge the transitional gap between middle school and high school.” It has several phases; a seminar for students and parents, a field trip to the Escape Room at North Olmsted, the designing of a digital escape room.

$2649 has been awarded to Graham Codney and Kim Dunlap for a Gillis-Sweet and Mayer Middle School collaboration.  Their grant “Sphero Bolt Coding Robot” will enable students to “hone their programming skills, critical thinking, problem solving, logical reasoning, collaboration, communication as well as the design process.”

$1167 has been awarded to Preschool Intervention Specialist Megan Frenz for her grant “Parkview Playground Communication Board”. This Core Communication Board will allow “the  staff and students a way to communicate if they are not able to do so with their verbal words”.  A similar communication board is currently being used in the building.  This grant will provide a communication board for the playground area.

The Fairview Park Education Foundation provides grants for the enrichment of the Fairview Park City public schools for the enrichment of school curriculum, the enhancement of instruction, and the implementation of other appropriate activities to achieve specific education goals.  The grants are funded through individual donations and through proceeds from various fundraisers.

TWO NEW SCHOLARSHIPS ADDED FOR 2022 FAIRVIEW HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATING SENIORS!!

The Fairview Park Education Foundation would like to congratulate the Fairview High School Class of 1971 on their 50th Reunion!! They celebrated their 50th class reunion in September reminiscing about their high school days and enjoying each others company.

We would like to thank the alumni of the 1971 50th class reunion for their generous donation of $2,000.00 to the Fairview Park Education Foundation. Mark Summers from the Class of 1971 stated that Fairview High School provided them a great education and the ability to go forward with their future dreams and they wanted to help provide that to future graduating Fairview High School seniors.

The monies will be set up as two scholarships in their name for the 2022 graduating Fairview High School seniors. The first $1,000.00 scholarship will be set up for a student who would like to go to a college or university but has significant financial need that may restrict that dream for them. The second $1,000.00 will be given to a graduating senior who will be going to a trades school (i.e. electrical, plumbing, construction, masonry, etc. ). This money will be added to the Michael & Jeanne Holick Memorial Scholarship which is also for a student going into the trades. They will join forces to provide scholarships for these students.

Founded in 1984, the Fairview Park Education Foundation was created to develop additional sources of revenue to enrich, enhance and supplement the educational experiences and curriculum of the Fairview Park City School District. The Foundation strives to act for the benefit of our students, educators and community. Foundation activities include teacher grants for the enrichment of student programs and scholarships for graduating seniors.

Thank you again FHS Class of 1971 Alumni 50th Reunion for your outstanding donation!!

Lewis F. Mayer Middle School students explore family traditions and stories

Natalie Bauman, a video producer from the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning, speaks with a middle school English Language Arts class.

Students in grades 6-8 at Lewis F. Mayer Middle school are learning to connect with their families in a new way.

Through a grant from the Fairview Park Education Foundation, students are engaging in a cross-curricular learning project in their English, Social Studies, and Operation Advantage classes where they are learning how to interview their family members, record and edit video, and publish their work.

Students were asked to read books by Alan Gantz over the summer, with a visit by the author this fall, however, due to the publisher canceling book tour dates for Gantz, another plan was put into action.

The Fairview Park Education Foundation generously stepped in with a $4,400 grant to be able to bring local artist Natalie Bauman in to Lewis F. Mayer Middle School.

Bauman is a video producer and has created an App called “SimplyTold” which provides interview prompts to guide users through creating a personal or family legacy, one video at a time.

Natalie Bauman is the founder and CEO of The Digital Mosaic, LLC, an online video storytelling experience, to better serve families, organizations and people who want to tell and preserve their collaborative stories. Using her years of expertise in interviewing people and creating compelling stories, she’s created an easy-to-use video platform that bridges the huge gap between shooting videos on a phone and hiring a professional.

Organizations like the Alzheimer’s Association, leading senior care providers, and the Cuyahoga County Public Library system, are all on-board using the SimplyTold tool to gather the stories that matter to the people they serve.

“The students’ natural enthusiasm to share their own stories is so easily elevated to thinking about how to learn more about their family members,” said Bauman. “I love seeing them connect to their history and start to understand how their family’s experience impact them. Capturing and sharing their family stories helps kids see themselves in a different context, as part of a bigger picture, which I think is so important for pre-teens and teens. Digital storytelling tools like my SimplyTold app makes it easier to easily create and manage videos for Fairview Park City Schools Traditions program.”

Each middle school student in grades 6-8 will have an opportunity to showcase their projects under the theme of, “Tell Me Your Story: Family Traditions” which will be showcased to the community on October 3 beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the high school gym. Families are encouraged to attend and join together for a salad bar supper before or after viewing student projects.
